Industrial Illusions

about

This song was conceived in the Winter of 2020, shortly before the pandemic hit. Detroit was cold and covered in snow. Plumes of steam escaping from the century old thermal heating system floated over the streets; obscuring the stone and steel monuments to Detroit’s industrial heyday that populate the skyline. On days like this I liked to squint my eyes and pretend that I was back in the booming twentieth century capital of industry whose skeleton surrounded me. The track’s title was born of this conceit. The influence of ‘80s and ‘90s R&B and Hip Hop is clear, but there are also touches of modern trap and ‘80s sci-fi scores present. When the pandemic hit, we left Detroit. Months later I revisited this song and smoothed out some of the rough edges. That was a year ago today. It’s gathered digital dust on an external hard drive since then. Now I’m sharing it with you in the hopes that we can all squint our eyes and see a brighter picture than the one painted by the headlines.
