It was the Spring of 2016 and I was working in a warehouse in the South Bronx near the birthplace of Hip Hop. I remember “Panda” by Desiigner was everywhere: blasting out of passing cars, storefronts, subway stereos. I had a day off and watched the documentary The Art of Organized Noize about the production team behind iconic hits by Outkast, Goodie Mob, TLC, and others. It inspired me to dust off the microphone and revisit a beat that Rob Krums had sent my way a few months previous following a conversation we had about the production work of Mustard and possible new directions for our musical collaborations. I quickly recorded some adlibbed vocals inspired by things Rico Wade said in the documentary. Over the next few months I returned to the song, and tried adding more vocals, re-recording vocals, adding more synths to the beat, even adding guitar to the song. At one point the song was just guitar and vocals. Over the years it got abandoned and I forgot about it until this past spring when I rediscovered it while digging through old demos. I stripped it back down to the original beat, got rid of all the additional lyrics and vocals I’d added and most of the additional production elements, and went back to the original adlibbed vocal take. I slapped a couple of effects on the vocals and voila! I think it sounds raw and gritty and funky and captures that moment in my life perfectly. I hope you enjoy.
